Thanks for this article. From the bottom of my heart.

The GAC cuts were bittersweet; I have two friends that lost their jobs in the process, but the move to bring Youth and Collegiate Ministries together was an incredibly smart move. I have some major worries about how effective 4-6 staff people can be with such a broad genre of ministry. But I know Gina and her staff are incredibly capable and committed.

My campus ministry peers can rest at night knowing that Adrian McMullen is our guy in that office; many of us got to meet him at Yam Jam in Austin this past May. If you don't know him, facebook him, or call him and say hi.

I'm hopeful about the prospect of reclaiming and restoring Collegiate Ministry as a priority in our wonderful church.

Please remember all those who are now searching for new jobs / new calls as a result of those GAC Cuts. We owe it to them for all they have done to support us in our ministries.

Blessings,
Dan W. Boles

Thanks for writing this. I especially appreciate the good words about where to go from here.

I have spent the last couple of years seeing college ministry in action all over the U.S. (after 8 years of college ministry myself). Something has to happen to help American Christians see that we don't just need to value ministry to collegians "a little bit more." This whole thing is on its head; this is an area that should be a priority for us - even for practical reasons within denominations and churches, let alone the call to spiritually shepherd those God has entrusted to us...

I wrote an ebook detailing what I'd learned during a yearlong research trip, and those who care might find it helpful. It's at http://www.reachingthecampustribes.com - it's absolutely free and is meant for pastors, parents, youth pastors, and college ministers alike. And denominational leaders, of course. :)

Thanks for fighting this fight. From what I've seen, I sense that this could be turning around; many Christians do seem to be asking what we can do to reach college students and young adults better. Hopefully the denominations will catch up sooner rather than later. - Benson Hines

Some time ago while serving as chair of the Higher Education/Campus Ministry committee of a Presbytery we were in a discussion about budget cuts. (and friends this was 15 years ago). One woman who wanted more money for presbytery mission said that the college budget could be cut and no one would miss it.
I hesitated, trying to find the right words to respond. I said well let's think if we cut off our young people from being ministered to by Presbyterian College Support/campus ministries when they leave school and are on their own will they go 'back' to being Presbyterian? Who then will fund your mission?
It was a thought that has lingered - Barbara G. McGarey
